What did I add in the editing (P5)

During the editing process, I made several adjustments to enhance the overall spookiness of the video. To create a sense of tension and anticipation, I incorporated spooky music and black screen breaks that gradually built up to the climax. Additionally, I included credit scenes and intros to give the video a more polished and professional look. I reviewed the footage carefully and made the necessary adjustments to ensure that the cuts and jump cuts were seamless and the angles were correct. Lastly, I added darkness to certain scenes to intensify the sense of horror and create a more immersive experience for the audience.

How does it fit the client brief (M4)

When creating the film to meet the client's needs, it starts with a bold presentation, with white text on a black background, setting a professional tone right from the start. This briefly introduces the production and solidifies the company's brand in the viewer's mind. Following the client's instructions, they display the age rating, ensuring it reaches the right audience and meets regulatory standards.

The cast features young actors chosen carefully to connect with viewers within their age group, strengthening the film's relevance and appeal. To stay within the age rating guidelines and meet client requirements, they use cutaways to imply violent acts rather than showing them explicitly, making a creative choice that lessens content severity while preserving its impact. Including credits at the end adds another touch of professionalism, setting this work apart from amateur projects.

Keeping it at 5 minutes and 19 seconds also aligns precisely with BFI's specified duration range, meeting the minimum length needed. This runtime serves the story well and shows attention to detail when following client instructions.

All these components, along with the finalisation of a thorough treatment, character sketches, scenes of locations, and story outlines, demonstrate that the project has been carried out with a comprehensive grasp of the requirements outlined in the brief. As a result, the film is ready for submission with solid proof of meeting all criteria established by the BFI.

How does the film create meaning (D1)

The film extends its storytelling beyond the narrative through judicious technical choices that deepen the audience's engagement and understanding. The significance of the film is crafted through a layering of auditory and visual techniques that enhance the viewer's emotional and psychological investment in the story. Using a music box soundtrack, traditionally associated with innocence, plays against the horror genre's backdrop to imply a sinister twist on purity. This juxtaposition of sound and theme subtly prepares the audience for a narrative of corrupted innocence central to the genre.

The film’s colour palette is visually desaturated, casting the environment in stark, almost bleak tones, intensifying the sense of dread and foreboding synonymous with horror. The editing technique employing erratic transitions manifests a disquieting sense of time, contributing to the viewer's disorientation and amplifying the horror atmosphere. This is coupled with the strategic use of parallel close-up shots that sharply cut from one to the next, allowing the audience to witness the emotional dynamics between the antagonist and victim and heightening the tension.

Furthermore, the sparing use of a third character injects an element of mystery, a narrative thread common in horror that teases the viewer's curiosity about their role in the story's unfolding. This character’s minimal but potent presence leaves questions unanswered, providing a connection to potential future segments of the film and maintaining suspense.

Each of these cinematographic and narrative choices coalesces to forge a story that is not merely followed but felt. The audience is not just passive observers but participants in a carefully orchestrated experience that conveys the film’s meaning with clarity and impact. These harmoniously combined elements allow the viewer to fully grasp the events unfolding on screen and the undercurrents that drive the plot forward.
